Developmental editing focuses on big-picture elements of a manuscript. It is a more intensive, collaborative process between author and editor. Your editor will not implement any changes without your consent; your editor will identify areas of the text and provide ideas/alternatives that you will review and accept or reject.
Here are some aspects your editor will take into account when carrying out a developmental edit:
- Voice and style, your editor may make suggestions on portions of text which seem out of place (too formal or casual) in comparison to the rest of the text, or on langauge which seems weak or indescriptive in comparison to the rest of the text.
- Character development, your editor may make suggestions regarding actions a character takes, dialogues a character engages in, or the lack there of, in order to develop a more logical and dynamic character.
- Plot and pacing, your editor may make suggestions to create a more suspensful, mysterious, or logical development of the story. Your editor may also make suggestions to speed up areas of the story which are too slow for the reader, or lengthen areas which need to be dramatized more.
- Themes and messages, your editor may make suggestions to emphasize an important theme or message. This could involve adding text or rearranging text to highlight essential areas.
- Target Audience, finally, your editor may make suggestions to the manuscript in order to your story in the way it reaches your target audience. This could involve changes to language, plot, or character development.
